Great Youth Coaches Share Two Skills

All kinds of life coaches get into coaching because they love to help people, but youth coaching calls for a special breed. Youth coaches have a soft spot in their hearts for kids; they love to help them overcome obstacles; they love to see kids grow, succeed and thrive. Being an effective youth coach requires certain important traits, including being responsible, ethical and a great role model. However, there are two particularly important things that all great youth coaches do:

Cultivate Great Communication Skills

Having a knack for talking with kids of all ages is a crucial skill for a truly great youth coach. You should develop appropriate verbal as well as nonverbal communication skills (e.g. gestures, facial expressions and body language.) Tone, vocabulary, volume and articulation should be modulated to fit the age and temperament of the child as well as their situation. Strive to be calm, kind, patient and sensitive to each child's unique needs. Be a leader, but let the child learn their own lessons. Be prepared, organized, enthusiastic and positive in your communications.

Have Great Intuition About Kids

This quality is less tangible than communication, but no less important. Great youth coaches should have or develop the ability to detect readiness factors and indicators in kids for going to higher levels of development. Sensing talent and maturity levels within a child as well as when they need some extra guidance in a particular area are keys to being a great youth coach. Know when kids would benefit from a stern, serious demeanor, or when it's time to lighten up and have fun. Be liberal with your praise and encouragement, and your youth coaching clients will come to look forward to your sessions together.
